Style Diary: Full of Dreams

I discover most of my successes in the unsung and personal milestones that become my defining moments in life. This may apply to us all, yet some situations seem separate from the rest, more defining perhaps. I find myself wishing to be the sort of human being who seizes inhibition and bungee jumps…

I discover most of my successes in the unsung and personal milestones that become my defining moments in life. This may apply to us all, yet some situations seem separate from the rest, more defining perhaps. I find myself wishing to be the sort of human being who seizes inhibition and bungee jumps into a daring opportunity or situation, successfully.

More recently, my life has filled itself with innumerable surprises from embarking on new opportunities, meeting new people and growing relationships, discovering new aspects of myself. This personal revolution, of sorts, is the kind that evokes the ‘yes man’ spirit in a person and quite frankly, I welcome it with open arms. I have since accepted my life to be a box of chocolates, because I don’t know what surprise awaits unwrapping, thus it came as no surprise when I was asked to host the Coffee Business Morning presented by The Play Woman. When this opportunity presented itself, like a professional ‘yes man’ I said yes, even though I, regrettably, gave only half a second’s thought to the proposal. style diary

While my heart crumbled into small pieces to the pit of my stomach at the thought of hosting the event, in equal parts, the elation of immediately knowing what to wear incited excitement that was rapidly curtailed by a robust dose of anxiety. To help my case, I refreshed my memory to a great quote by Richard Branson that reads, “if somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you aren’t sure you can do it, say yes, then learn to do it later.” With this armor of an advice strapped against my bubbling anxiety, I now had enough mental space to contemplate the topic of conversation and what a great opportunity this was.

Redefining Success for the 21st Century Woman triggered deep contemplations about my personal

journey to success, more so how I intend to achieve it. When the speakers uttered, in passing, about such a time in their lives where the conceptualization for a career failed to clearly avail itself, I could breathe easier and be convinced that all will be well, and though I may be a damsel in career incertitude, I won’t be the first or last nor will I be the only one.

The most valuable lesson lay in the idea that success is not a destination but a journey. For so long I wished and prayed for a revolution of sorts, I wanted to see more, do more, be more and never settle, therefore each day is a day of consciously deciding to turn my life into a compilation of positive decisions (for the most part) where every feat is a small piece of great success.

I now fill my days with writing to the tunes of undisciplined inspirations, creating new relationships that amount to great collaborations on the work front, or great friendships and sometimes, a bit of both. Of course, opportunities such as these that choose you, and like a good improvised skit, I remain a ‘yes man’ all the way. The Coffee Business Morning beamed with major girl power and sitting in a room filled with powerful women, empowering one another was as inspiring as inspirations come.

The event spurred my style towards the notable ‘power dress’ with a twist, a knot, and one big little trick. For when family disappear into the ether, friends desert me and all I have left are myself and some clothes, a cardigan will be worn in reverse and knotted to the side.

Sans the dramatics, I consistently venture to wear my clothes in more ways than one intended style.
