A new study by global insurance firm, William Russell, has named Lithuania as the most affordable European country for migrants in 2025, while Switzerland topped the list of the most expensive destinations.

The report assessed the cost of essential items in each country, including public transport, fuel, internet, utility bills, eating out, and gym memberships.

While Mexico ranks highest globally in terms of value for money, the report noted that Lithuania is currently the cheapest option in Europe for foreigners seeking affordable living.

According to the findings, Lithuania has the cheapest average internet bill in Europe, at £11.64 per month.

The country also ranks among the top five for the lowest public transport costs, with tickets priced at just 85p.

Most migrants in Lithuania live in the capital city, Vilnius, known for its medieval Old Town and previously listed as Europe’s most affordable city break.

The city also offers access to a 90km coastline, sandy beaches, and forest reserves ideal for weekend activities.

Rent in the country remains relatively low, with a city centre apartment in Vilnius averaging €625 or £539 per month, according to data from Numbeo.

Poland ranks second

Poland was listed as the second most affordable country in Europe for migrants.

According to the report:,cinema ticket in Poland costs £5.77, monthly internet costs are about £12.26 and gym membership is priced at £27.71

The report stated that cities such as Warsaw and Kraków continue to attract foreign nationals due to a combination of modern infrastructure and modest living expenses.

Switzerland leads as most expensive

At the other end of the scale, Switzerland was named the most expensive country in Europe for foreigners.

The report revealed that gym membership in Switzerland costs £65.74 per month, cinema ticket is priced at £18.15 and Public transport costs around £3.08 per journey

Iceland and Norway were also ranked among Europe’s most expensive countries. In Iceland, public transport costs £3.77 per journey, while internet bills average £60.44 per month. In Norway, a one-way transport ticket costs £3, and average internet subscription is £44.24.

Estonia leads in spending burden

The study also examined how much of their monthly income migrants spend on essential living expenses.

It found that migrants in Estonia spend approximately 14.7 per cent of their income on basic needs, making it the highest in Europe.

Greece and Slovakia followed, with migrants in both countries spending 13.9 per cent of their monthly income on essentials.

Experts warn on budgeting

Speaking on the findings, a William Russell spokesperson said the cost of living could pose unexpected challenges for migrants if not properly planned for.

“The cost of living can vary dramatically from one destination to another, and what seems like a dream move can become a budgeting nightmare if you’re not prepared.

“From sky-high rent and restaurant bills to unexpected utility costs, your money might not stretch as far as it did back home. Whether you’re relocating for work or chasing a new adventure, it’s important to safeguard the income that supports your lifestyle,” the spokesperson said.
