6 major symptoms of Mpox you shouldn’t ignore
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare viral disease that shares similarities with smallpox. While it has primarily been found in Africa, recent outbreaks in other regions have raised global concerns.
Recently European countries have been warned to brace up for more Mpox surge as it becomes a concern to the world.
Recognising the symptoms early can be crucial for preventing the spread and ensuring timely medical attention. Here are six symptoms of mpox you shouldn’t ignore:
Fever
One of the earliest signs of mpox is a sudden onset of fever. This flu-like symptom can be accompanied by chills and is often a precursor to other, more severe symptoms. If you experience an unexplained fever, especially after potential exposure to mpox, seek medical advice.
Rash
The most distinctive symptom of mpox is a rash that progresses through different stages. It starts as flat, red spots that evolve into raised bumps, which then fill with fluid or pus. Over time, these bumps crust over and fall off. The rash can appear on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or any part of the body. This rash can be painful, and in some cases, may not be accompanied by other symptoms.
Swollen lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes are a common symptom of mpox, distinguishing it from similar diseases like chickenpox. Lymph nodes may swell in the neck, armpits, or groin area, often causing discomfort or pain. This swelling usually occurs before or alongside the appearance of the rash.

Muscle aches
Along with flu-like symptoms, muscle aches (myalgia) are common in individuals with mpox. These aches can affect various parts of the body and contribute to the overall feeling of malaise. Persistent muscle pain, especially when combined with other symptoms, should not be overlooked.
Headache
A severe headache often accompanies the onset of mpox. This symptom can be intense and persistent, making daily activities difficult. Combined with fever and other symptoms, a headache may indicate a need for medical evaluation, particularly if it is unusually severe or does not respond to typical treatments.
Fatigue
Fatigue is another common symptom of mpox that can linger throughout the course of the illness. This extreme tiredness can make even simple tasks exhausting. If you experience unexplained fatigue alongside other symptoms, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider.
Lastly, we should also note that, Mpox can manifest in various ways, and not everyone will experience all symptoms. However, if you notice any of these signs—especially in combination—don’t ignore them.
Early detection and isolation are key to managing the disease and preventing its spread. If you suspect you have been exposed to mpox or develop these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
