Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila aka May D, has said that there was a time he ranked above Afrobeats stars like Wizkid and Davido in the Nigerian music industry.

The singer, known for his hits like Soundtrack and Ile Ijo, made this revelation during a recent interview on The Honest Bunch podcast.

Speaking during the podcast episode, May D reminisced about the early days of his career, claiming that he, Wizkid, and Davido were once the top three artists in the country.

He went further to assert that his music once surpassed theirs in popularity. “Then it was Wizkid, David, and I. I was even like bigger. Wetin be ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack?’ he stated.

May D came into the limelight after joining Square Records, the record label owned by the award-winning duo P-Square, in 2011.

However, his tenure with the label was short-lived, as he was dropped in August 2012, a decision that he believes derailed his meteoric rise.

Reflecting on his fallout with P-Square, the 39-year-old singer expressed that parting ways with the label was a major turning point in his career.

He had previously suggested that his departure from Square Records allowed other artists, including Wizkid, to eclipse him in the industry.

May D also revealed details about his living conditions and financial struggles while signed to the label.

“When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house, he was like, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here oh.’ If I had a room, it would have been cooler.”

May D further disclosed that during his four years with the label, he didn’t own a bank account, “It’s only when someone has money that he opens an account.”
