Ten people were confirmed dead in a ghastly motor accident around Alapako/Ogunmakin by the Foursquare Camp ground, Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Tuesday night.
The fatal crash occurred around 9:00p.m. immediately after the diversion by a construction firm working on highway, RCC, to enable repairs of the weakened bridges around the segments of the expressway.
According to a statement signed by Ogun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Clement Oladele, a commercial bus with registration number BDJ 410 YM, travelling from Lagos attempted to overtake vehicles travelling at the section of the road close to the diversion and in the process collided head-on with a Dangote truck, laden with cement, travelling in opposite direction, which was coming from Ibadan.
This resulted in the entire passengers in the bus trapped and it took the intervention of RCC crane requested by the FRSC rescue team, to extricate the trapped passengers from the truck.
“A total of 10 passengers died from injuries sustained from the impact of the crash. They were made up of seven males and three females. A total of 11 adults were involved in the crash, comprising eight male adults and three female adult. One male occupant who survived was taken to Ife-Plus, a hospital at Ogunmakin, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Ipata,” he said.
Oladele noted that the FRSC rescue team recovered a total of N151,340, with 10 mobile phones and goods worth several thousands of naira.
He enjoined members of the public whose family members travelled in the ill-fated commercial bus to contact the FRSC Command at KM 27 Lagos Ibadan expressway located at Alapako-Ogunmakin, Ogun State for retrieval of the bodies and their belongings.
The FRSC boss, however, reminded motorists of an earlier traffic advisory issued by the command on December 16, 2017 over the diversion created around Sancrete up to Fidiwo bridge by RCC to enable the repairs of the weakened bridges around the area, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
