No fewer than 14 people were confirmed dead, while 14 others were injured in two separate road crashes in Gombe State.

The first accident occurred at Bypass, a suburb of the metropolis in Akko Local Council when a trailer marked Bauchi: KRM 157 KS, failed brake, killed eleven passers-by and injured another eleven.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old driver of the trailer now on admission at the State Specialist Hospital, Gombe, said: “I actually tried but I couldn’t just stop the vehicle, it was too late when I realised the brake was no longer functional.”

The state Commissioner for health, Dr. Habu Dahiru,  who led the government’s delegation to the hospital,  confirmed that eleven people died in the accident.

He said: “Out of the injured, eight have been discharged and three are presently on admission.”

The commissioner, who said only nine were confirmed dead on arrival, said: “When we realised we didn’t have enough facilities here, we referred four to the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe for better treatment, unfortunately, two died on the way.”

Dahiru further disclosed that another auto crash occurred at Lawanti on Gombe-Bauchi road, while four people were brought to the hospital dead and two were still on the danger list.

Meanwhile, the delegation announced a donation of N50,000 each to the three surviving victims of Gombe metropolis accident and N25,000 to each of the two victims of the Gombe-Bauchi carnage.
