1,720 Deltans get Okowa’s N320m scholarship
Delta State government has given N320 million scholarship to 1,720 indigenes studying in different higher institutions in the country for the 2019 academic year.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa made this known during the official flag-off of the payment to beneficiaries of various schemes of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board in Asaba.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Jude Sinebe, said the beneficiaries include 979 law students, 50 Ph.D students, 55 physically-challenged persons, 614 children of deceased civil servants on the state scholarship and 22 first class students.
“It is a deliberate policy of this administration to give special attention to education in the state, and this explains the renewed financial support to various scholarships and bursary schemes,” the governor said.
“The state executive council approved the payment of N312,448,574.60 to cater for 14,171 students who applied for the 2017/2018 Student Special Assistance Scheme as bursary, which would be paid in the next few weeks.
“A total of 82,901 Deltans studying in various institutions within and outside Nigeria have benefitted from the various schemes operated by the state government since May 2015. This is to alleviate the financial burden of its citizenry.”
