2027: Attack on Tinubu is attack on North, says APC chieftain

Mallam Salihu Isa Nataro

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State Mallam Salihu Isa Nataro, has cautioned northern politicians against opposing the second-term ambition of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that such moves amount to an attack on the interests of the North.

Nataro argued that recent declines in food prices signal that the administration’s reforms are beginning to yield results, particularly benefiting farmers across the northern region. He described the removal of fuel subsidy as one of the most courageous economic decisions in Nigeria’s history.

Despite his support, the public sector reform expert expressed concern that some government appointees have not shown enough creativity in implementing policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda, urging the president to replace underperforming officials.

On fiscal management, Nataro explained that the Ministry of Finance primarily handles government receipts, payments, and regulatory oversight, including the disbursement of funds to ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

He stressed the need to reduce the number of MDAs to cut costs, especially as Nigeria continues to grapple with rising foreign debt obligations.

Commenting on foreign policy, he welcomed growing engagement with Russia, referencing recent diplomatic interactions involving the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

He said closer ties could open pathways for Nigeria’s alignment with emerging blocs like BRICS.

While acknowledging the role of opposition in holding government accountable, Nataro warned that failure by northern voters to support Tinubu’s re-election bid would be a setback for the region.

He also recalled Tinubu’s time as governor of Lagos State, noting his efforts to promote agricultural partnerships between the North and South, particularly rice farming initiatives in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, as well as support for education and regional development.

Describing himself as a loyal supporter, Nataro said he admires the president’s bold reform agenda despite criticism over some appointments, emphasizing that economic transformation in developing countries takes time.
