…Says Wike’s support for Tinubu, mark of integrity
A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Sandy Onor, has formally joined the 2027 presidential race, declaring his intention to lead the party back to power.
Onor, who obtained the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Saturday, said his decision was driven by sustained pressure from party leaders and stakeholders across the country.
Addressing journalists shortly after picking the forms, he expressed confidence in his capacity and the party’s prospects, noting that the PDP remains a formidable political platform despite recent internal challenges.
“Upon persuasion from the leadership and followership of this party across the country, I have come to pick the expression of interest and nomination forms to contest for the presidency under this great party,” he said.
“We will proceed with the process, and by the grace of God, when I emerge, we will engage further with Nigerians.”
Onor maintained that the PDP had overcome its internal crises and was now better positioned to reclaim power at the national level.
“This party is a legacy institution that has showcased the beauty of democracy in Nigeria. It has demonstrated resilience, provided direction and prosperity, and remains committed to putting the people at the centre of governance,” he added.
Responding to concerns over the stance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has openly backed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, Onor said the minister’s position does not pose any threat to his ambition or the party’s direction.
According to him, while Wike remains a prominent figure within the PDP, his personal political choice should not be conflated with the collective position of the party.
“Barrister Nyesom Wike is indisputably a leader of the party, but he is not the party,” Onor stated. “The fact that I am running is a result of deep persuasion from stakeholders across the country.”
He described Wike’s support for Tinubu as an act rooted in personal conviction and integrity, noting that the minister had made his position clear even before assuming office in the current administration.
“If Nyesom Wike does not support President Tinubu, Nigerians will question his integrity. He has taken a position, and that is his right. But that does not determine the direction of the PDP,” he said.
Onor stressed that the PDP would field a credible presidential candidate through a democratic process, adding that he would lead the party with courage and responsibility if given the mandate.
“This party will choose a candidate that will contest and win. If I am given that opportunity, I will lead with capacity and a strong sense of duty. Nigerians will ultimately decide, and I believe they are yearning for PDP-style governance,” he said.
The aspirant also highlighted the party’s democratic credentials, recalling its history of conceding electoral defeat in the interest of national stability.
“This is a party that has run elections, lost elections, and conceded to opponents in the interest of democracy. That legacy remains a source of pride,” he noted.
Onor expressed optimism that the PDP could surpass its past achievements and usher in a new era of progress.
“If you have seen the PDP in its days of glory, then buckle up. This party is ready to exceed those days and take Nigeria into a new season of greatness,” he added.
In his reaction, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, commended Onor for his interest in the race and assured him of a level playing field.
“We understand your vision and intention. The party will ensure a transparent process and provide the necessary support,” Mohammed said.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, unity, and inclusiveness as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
