45 years after, ESUT faculty of engineering lists achievements

The Faculty of Engineering at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) stated on Wednesday that the production of the National Assembly Maze, ESUT Computer, Foundries, and Kitchen Stoves, among others, would remain the signature inventions of the faculty in its 45 years of existence.

A former dean of the faculty, Prof. Ike Oluka, stated this while addressing Journalists in Enugu as part of the activities for the 45th anniversary and alumni homecoming of the faculty.

Oluka, who serves as the chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the anniversary, stated that the faculty, which has graduated over 70,000 students who are making the country proud in various disciplines since its establishment in 1980, explained that the homecoming would be utilised to showcase other innovations by the faculty.

He stated that no fewer than 5000 graduates of the faculty would converge on Enugu for the two-day event scheduled in November this year, emphasising that the aim was to celebrate them and usher in a new era for the faculty.
“The main goal is to assess our strengths and weaknesses; celebrate our successes and strategise on how to improve on our strengths and to turn around our weak sides. At 45, we have reviewed and updated our academic curricula and programmes to reposition our ESUT engineering for excellence and to enable us to meet the challenges of the 21st century in engineering and technology,” he stated

He explained that as part of the repackaging for the repositioning agenda of the faculty, buildings, machines and laboratory equipment have been articulated by the nine departments for 21st-century teaching, learning and research.

Oluka stated that graduates of the faculty are dispersed across various parts of the world, mentioning that the gathering would be unprecedented in the country.
“We will roll out more of our skills during the event. If we have nothing to celebrate, we will not be calling for an anniversary. Our graduates have made names for themselves in several concerns in the country – at Shell Nigeria, at the MTN and various Assembly plants as well as organisations in the world”, he stated

Also speaking, the Co-Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr Innocent Akuvue, said he was hopeful many graduates of the faculty would honour the programme because of the ambience Enugu provides.

He said that several activities have been planned to support the faculty and assist the students, emphasising that plans are in place to improve the existing departments at the faculty.
