500 days to Dakar 2026: Celebrating youth, sport, African identity

Powerful new video, street art campaigns, and youth-driven events mark a key milestone on the road to Africa’s first Olympic event.

Today marks 500 days to go until the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2026 – the first Olympic event ever to be held on African soil. To commemorate the occasion, the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee (YOGOC) is launching a series of cultural and community-focused initiatives across Senegal, blending sport, art, and youth engagement in a uniquely African celebration of global unity and Olympic values.

A Love Letter to Africa: Official Dakar 2026 Video Released

At the heart of the 500-day milestone is the unveiling of the official Dakar 2026 promotional video – a cinematic tribute to the continent’s vibrant spirit, youth potential, and the transformative power of sport.

Narrated with poetic intensity, the video features a special appearance by Senegalese Olympic silver medallist Amadou Dia Ba (400m hurdles, Seoul 1988), and showcases young athletes from across Senegal. It offers a dynamic preview of the 35 sports on the YOG programme and highlights the beauty and energy of the host sites – Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.

The video encapsulates the Games’ vision: a celebration of African identity, resilience, and creativity on the world stage.

Street Art Brings the Olympic Spirit to Life

As part of the countdown campaign, 10 young graffiti artists are transforming public spaces across five Senegalese cities – Dakar, Diamniadio, Saly, Ziguinchor, and Saint-Louis – into open-air canvases. Their murals blend the Dakar 2026 logo and the Games’ official motto, “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates,” with bold expressions of local culture and community pride.

The initiative seeks to bring the Olympic spirit directly to the streets, engaging Senegalese youth and residents in the lead-up to the Games.

Olympic Day to Spotlight Youth and Sport

Celebrations continue on Olympic Day, 23 June, with a major event in Dakar featuring over 1,000 schoolchildren. The half-day programme will include sports demonstrations across 12 disciplines, a group fitness session, and interactive educational exhibits promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.

This initiative underscores Dakar 2026’s commitment to using sport as a platform for youth empowerment, education, and social inclusion.

Looking Ahead: A Historic Moment for Africa

Set to take place from 31 October to 13 November 2026, the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 will bring together the world’s best young athletes (aged 15–18) for two weeks of elite competition, cultural exchange, and innovation. Events will be staged across three host zones: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.

More than just a sporting event, Dakar 2026 promises to be a defining moment for Africa – a platform to showcase its youth, creativity, and potential to the world.
