The police in Benin, Edo, on Tuesday arraigned a 29-year-old mechanic, Segun Moses, at an Oredo Magistrates’ court for allegedly stealing two commercial buses.
The police prosecutor, Mr Sylvester Omor, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said that the accused was charged with conspiracy and stealing.
He told the court that Moses vandalised the buses belonging to one Mr Okotie Joshua, which was taken to him for repair.
Omor said that the accused, who had collected N70, 000 to do the job, sold the vandalised vehicles as spare parts.
He told the court that the buses were worth N1million.
He said that the offences were committed on Jan. 31, 2014, in Urubi St., Benin.
The prosecutor said that offences contravened Section 393 (1) (2) (a) and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 48 Vol. II Laws of the defunct Bendel of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs C.O. Nwoha, granted bail to the accused in sum of N100,000 and one surety in like sum.
Nwoha adjourned the case till Oct. 19 for hearing.
