60-year-old well driller, son die of suffocation in Kano

A 60-year-old well driller, Malam Bala, yesterday, died of suffocation inside a deep well alongside his 35-year-old son, Sunusi Bala, in Kano.

The tragic incident occurred at Sabon Garin Bauchi in Wudil Local Council of Kano State, about 35 kilometres away from the metropolis, when they were trapped in a water well they both dug.

A spokesperson for Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, revealed that men of the service who arrived at the scene could only rescue the lifeless bodies of the victims.

According to the fire service, the 35-year-old Sunusi, who was in the well to clear the mud, was earlier trapped in the water.

On noticing that, the father quickly moved into the same well to rescue his son but got stuck in the process.

He said: “ Wudil fire station received an emergency call at about 11:30 a.m. from one Isma’ila Idris, who was alerted of an incident at Sabon Garin Bauchi in Wudil Local Council.

“ Immediately our rescue team from Wudil fire station were deployed and they arrived at the scene at about 11:33 a.m.

“ On arrival, they found a father and his son who were called to drain a well and were trapped. We gathered that after they successfully drained the well, in the process to clear the mud, the son by the name Sunusi Bala entered the well and was trapped and died of suffocation.

“Thereafter, his father of about 60 years by name Malam Bala, who was trying to rescue him became a victim when he was trapped due to the lack of oxygen inside the well. The victims were rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead.

“The remains of the victims have been handed over to the police at Model Station in Wudil.
