AAF unveils Airtel Africa Fellowship

To support students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), the Airtel Africa Foundation (AAF) has announced the launch of the Airtel Africa Fellowship programme for undergraduate students at the institute.

  
Starting with a funding of $500,000, the programme will benefit ten undergraduate students during the entire course duration of four years. A statement by the foundation, reads: “This fellowship is the maiden initiative undertaken to enhance educational opportunities for meritorious students, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled at IITM. It is designed to support students from Nigeria as well as Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, DRC, Niger, Chad, Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and Seychelles.
  
“Recipients will be known as Airtel Africa Fellows and will receive 100 per cent of their fees ($12,000) for a four-year programme. To cover living expenses, $500 will be given to all eligible students. This initiative will aspire to transform, shape lives and nurture future leaders, who will contribute to technological innovation and economic growth of Africa.”
  
Commenting on the fellowship scheme, Zanzibar’s Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Lela Mohamed Mussa, lauded the initiative for charting a path in technical education in the region.
  
Chairman, AAF, Dr Olusegun Ogunsanya, said they were pleased to partner with IITM to provide opportunities for young Africans to access quality education, adding that the initiative aimed to contribute towards creating a prosperous and sustainable continent. 
   
Director, IITM, Prof V. Kamakoti, said they were committed to establishing a world-class campus and were delighted that the foundation was partnering with them. 
  
“We look forward to welcoming the second cohort of bright students to the IITM campus and are immensely grateful to Airtel Africa Foundation for providing financial assistance for these future global leaders,” he said.
