Abia APC elects ex-bank chief as chairman
Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the weekend, elected a former General Manager, Risk Management of Spring Bank Plc, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu, as its new chairman.
This followed preparations for the visit of the Senator Abdullahi Adamu Reconciliation Committee to the state.
The Guardian recalled that the office of state chairman became vacant in December 2021 following the death of the immediate past Chairman, Mazi Enyi Harbor, who was elected into the office at the state congress in October 2021.
The congress, which held in Umuahia, attracted members loyal to Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, including Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, who represents Umunneochi and Isuikwuato Federal Constituency and leader of the party in the state, Chief F. N. Nwosu.
Chairman of the Special Congress Committee, Kolawole Babatunde, declared that Ononogbu, who was the sole candidate, polled 1, 067 votes of the 1, 075 ballots cast.
Babatunde, a former member of the House of Representatives, explained that although there were 1, 085 delegates to the congress, only 1, 080 were accredited, while eight votes were voided, adding that the exercise, which was endorsed by the Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), was fair and transparent.
In his acceptance speech, Ononogbu said the responsibility thrust on him was tasking, stressing that his election was coming at a time when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would want to return to power by all means in 2023 despite its 24 years of maladministration in the state.
