Abia North 2027: APC chieftain urges ex-deputy Gov Chukwu to back Kalu

A senior All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Abia State, Edward Kalu Okocha, has publicly advised former Deputy Governor Ude Oko Chukwu, who recently defected to the Labour Party, to refrain from contesting the Abia North Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections and instead throw his weight behind incumbent Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Ameke, Abiriba, Okocha described Oko Chukwu’s move to Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party as “bold and strategic,” highlighting it as a demonstration of his commitment to the development of Abia State and the Abia North Senatorial Zone.

However, Okocha cautioned that the excitement surrounding his new political chapter should not lead Oko Chukwu to challenge Senator Kalu, noting the incumbent’s established record and seniority in the National Assembly.

“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone. His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the Senate Presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people,” Okocha said.

Drawing on historical context, Okocha recalled supporting Oko Chukwu’s third-term bid in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2010, despite initial opposition, a decision he said later facilitated key initiatives such as the skill acquisition centre in Abiriba and ultimately propelled Oko Chukwu to the deputy governorship.

“This same strategic thinking is needed today. As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people,” Okocha added.

He further congratulated Oko Chukwu on his defection while urging him to prioritise the collective progress of Abia North by supporting Senator Kalu’s re-election bid.

The statement underscores the ongoing realignment of political forces in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections, reflecting the strategic considerations of party leaders and their efforts to consolidate influence within the senatorial district.
