Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called for a peaceful and enabling environment to pave the way for the desired development in the country.

Abubakar stated that governance is difficult in an atmosphere that lacks peace.

Speaking at the 4th convocation ceremony of PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) held at the institution’s auditorium in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday, Abubakar, who is the Chancellor of PAMO University, commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for not only continuing with the scholarship scheme but increasing it from 100 to 150 students, which he said is inspiring for healthcare delivery.

He noted that the institution has been consistent in increasing physical structures, including lecture halls, libraries, hostels, and other learning facilities, making teaching and learning more conducive for staff and students.

The former head of state encouraged the graduands to be ambassadors of positive change and contribute meaningfully to the health sector.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Dr. Peter Odili, described Governor Fubara as a humble, irrepressible, and tough young man who has fought to defend the state.

He lauded the governor for approving the immediate employment of all the graduands through the Rivers State Ministry of Health.

Odili revealed that the medical institution has released 223 graduates into the medical community after being certified in character and learning.

“In PAMO, we have zero tolerance for cultism, gangsterism, sorting, harassment, and drugs. We are passionately and unapologetically committed to enforcing zero tolerance,” he stated.

He congratulated the 76 graduands and charged them to uphold the lessons learned as they advance in the medical profession.

Governor Fubara, speaking at the event, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a safer environment for all residents while creating opportunities to foster prosperity and accelerated transformation across sectors.

The governor said that despite senseless political distractions, he remains resolute in leaving behind convincing development strides and legacies that will surpass what he inherited.

Governor Fubara promised that the State Government would sustain its partnership with the institution to strengthen the quality of medical education, further transforming the healthcare delivery system for the betterment of the people and the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Kpasa Tracy Mekelachi, who received four awards — best graduating student of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, NMA prize for best graduating medical doctor, overall best graduating medical student, and overall best graduating student — thanked God, the management of the institution, lecturers, parents, and guests.
