Residents in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja are going to the polls Saturday to elect local council officials in an election that will test the popularity of President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress.
About 14 political parties are participating in the elections, including the ruling APC.
Others include Action Democratic Party (ADP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), African Action Congress (AAC) and Labour Party (LP).
The elections will hold in 68 wards in Abaji, Abuja Municipal Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali area councils of the FCT.
The Independent National Electoral Commission said 473 candidates from 14 political parties are participating. 55 of those candidates will are hoping to be elected chairpersons of the six councils.
The election will hold between 8 am and 3 pm today. Our reporters said the processes are picking up slowly in some areas.
At Zango 006 polling station, accreditation was yet to start as of 8.45 am. There was no election official at the polling unit. But voters were already checking their names on the register pasted at the PU.
At the Science Primary School, Kuje, officials had already received election materials and voters were on ground to cast ballots as of 8:50 am.
At the Federal Government Girls College, Bwari, accreditation was yet to start as at 9 am with the voters on queue complaining that they should be attended to because of the sun.
Our reporter noted that FCDA polling unit 022 has only 5 registered voters but as of 9.12 am, none of the voters has shown up.
Another reporter observed that at the Government Day Secondary School, Bwari, INEC officials were still pasting names of voters on the wall and accreditation was yet to start as of 9:30 am.
At the Jabi polling unit 116, as of 9:35 am, none of the registered voters had shown up. But election officials were already set up.
