Erstwhile Acting Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintri of Adamawa State has survived an assassination plot after his Maitama, Abuja residence was invaded by assailants in the wee hours of Monday.

Currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Fintri told The Guardian on phone that the gunmen gained access into his bedroom around 4:00a.m. inflicted injury and was miraculously saved from their bullets.

His words: “ The attackers entered my bedroom around 4:00a.m. on Monday but I thank God that He protected me and my family members from the attackers.”

However, the national president of the Youth Wing of Christians Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), David Kadzai, said the incident was symptomatic of the failure of the Federal Government to address insecurity amid huge votes on security yearly.

He said the assassination attempt was a pointer that the 2019 general elections could be made violent by ineffective leaders to hold on to power.

To the state leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) the act was totally condemnable.

In a statement yesterday in Yola, the party state secretary, Abdullahi Adamu Prembe, said the incident had further confirmed the insecurity in the country.

He said: “ If a man of such status in our country is not safe, what happens to the ordinary man on the street? It is disheartening that such an attempt to assassinate a top chieftain of the PDP is coming close to the 2019 general elections. Under (former) President Goodluck Jonathan, it never happened. This is a clear intimidation of the opposition party.

“The party has viewed the action as not only barbaric, but also a calculated plan to intimidate, cajole and harass top chieftains of the PDP to abandon their role of building a solid democratic foundation through a competitive contest during the 2019 general elections.”

Prembe went on: “We called on the Federal Government to beef up security in both Abuja and Yola residences of Fintri as well as homes of our party chieftains in line with the constitutional responsibility of any responsible administration.“
