ADC holds congress, elects new leadership in Enugu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the weekend adopted a consensus arrangement that produced Prof Augustine Akubua as Chairman and 45 others as new leadership of the party in Enugu State.

This is as a former governor of Enugu State,Okwesilieze Nwodo, expressed confidence that the ADC would take over the reins of power in the state in 2027 and deliver improved governance.

At the state Congress of the party that attracted a mammoth crowd, the members also unanimously elected their delegates for it’s national convention.

The atmosphere at the Igbozurume venue of the congress was electrifying as aspirants and their supports matched round the area in turns, in an apparent show of their readiness to contest in the coming elections.

Enugu State Chairman of the Congress Committee, Dr Christian Okeke, had told the members that the consensus option was adopted following series of meetings by leaders of the party in the state.

He had therefore, taken time to reel out the list in accordance with the 17 local government areas of the state and swore them in to work for the party in the state.

Okeke, who observed that there was a dissent in the list from Enugu East Local Government however, advised the leader to use the appeal channels of the party to resolve the development.

He was however grateful for the support his committee received to undertake the exercise and urged the new leadership to be magnanimous in victory.

“The ADC has come to stay as a veritable alternative and irrespective of the leadership crisis at the centre, the party is strong and entrenched. You must continue to abide by rules and regulations to deepen this party.

“We came here, met with the leaders and stakeholders and they choose to elect their members by consensus from ward, local government and state. This is what we have done. We have looked at their lists and we have inaugurated the new state leadership. So am appeal committee is coming and if there is anything to the contrary, they can bring to the committee “, he stated.

Nwodo, who spoke at the congress said it was convened to elect credible leaders who would steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Nwodo stressed that the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy sets it apart and strengthens its structure across all levels.

“ADC believes in internal democracy, and that has made our structure very formidable. Everyone was given the opportunity to elect their leaders from the polling unit to the ward, local government, and now the state level.

“With this inclusive process, there will be unity, and with that unity, I am confident that we will change the present government in Enugu State and install a better one,” he added.

Meanwhile, in his acceptance a speech, new state chairman of the party, Prof Akuebue, said the peaceful Congress was an indication that a new Nigeria was possible.

“I am charting a new course and we will carry everyone along. We are going to look at all sides of politics and policies and we will enthroned a system that is good and acceptable to our people.

“We understand the message and that is, our people are simply saying that the government in the state has disappointed them. We shall work to enthroned good governance.

“Going forward, we shall abhor the use of thuggery and embrace intellectual welfare to create a new dynamics in politics”, he stated.

Some aspirants of the party, including Ogochukwu Onyema, Kingsley Nweke and Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, expressed optimism that the party would win the 2027 general elections, despite current crisis.

They stated that the crisis was imaginary and planted to scuttle it’s chances in the elections, stressing that it would soon be over. They urged the members to remain steadfast and continue to support to support the party.
