NEGF shifts annual meeting to Friday in Maiduguri

The North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has shifted its annual meeting from Thursday, September 10, 2026 to Friday, 11th September in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The Forum did not give reasons for the abrupt postponed rotational periodic meetings in the six state capitals of the region.

The new date for the high-level sub-regional meeting, has not been communicated.to the public, including the media.

The NEGF has also not officially stated the reason for the sudden cancelation, the announcement came in less than 24 hours before the scheduled Thursday opening proceedings.of the meeting.

Although media representatives were not formally notified of the cqncelation, sources within the Borno State Government involved in the event’s organization confirmed that the Thursday and Friday schedules had been unplugged.

“All preparations have been completed, but the meeting has been postponed,” a State official familiar with the arrangements disclosed under anonymity.

As earlier planned all the governors of the six states – Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba were being expected to arrive in Maiduguri on Friday while their respective secretaries or to to the state government were to be in Maiduguri Thursday for the preliminary technical sessions.

Formed in March 2020 in Bauchi, the Northeast Governors Forum functions as a non-partisan regional body aimed at addressing shared developmental and security crises across the geopolitical zone.

Their core area of concern include, Coordinating responses to the long-running insurgency, banditry, and cross-border security challenges; Developing joint infrastructure, such as interconnected road networks and regional power projects; collaborating with federal agencies, including the North East Development Commission (NEDC), to rebuild communities and resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs); and Unifying state-level policies on agriculture, education, and environmental issues like desertification.

The six-member forum meets rotationally across the six member states to review progress and issue joint communiqués pushing for federal intervention in the region.
