Adegboruwa urges NCC to probe telcos over data charges

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been asked to probe telecommunication firms to ensure transparency in their dealings.

Human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, made the call yesterday following several complaints from subscribers on the prohibitive data regime through which the operators fleece them.

The activist observed that virtually all the telcos companies had adopted a secret method of fleecing their subscribers through the regime.

With the recent increase in Facebook subscriptions, the proliferation of WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms, telcos, he noted, have suddenly turned data subscription into gold mines.

“In most cases, the data network is so poor that it takes ages to download simple links. This is totally unacceptable,” he stressed.

Adegboruwa recalled that when the GSM regime started in Nigeria, the telcos were grandstanding that per second billing was impossible, until the famous boycott of 2003, which birthed the liberalisation being capitalised upon today by the telcos.
