Admission to varsities not based on discretion, says ex- VC
Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Rahmon Bello, has said that admission into universities, especially public ones, was not based on discretion.
He explained that it was rather a function of government’s regulations known to the university authorities, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and other relevant bodies.
He pointed out that the laid-down rules help the institutions of higher learning when faced with high number of candidates from among whom they select for the limited spaces in their various universities.
Reflecting on his experience when he was Vice Chancellor, Bello, a one-time Commissioner of Education in Ogun State, who will be honoured by the Yewaland Development Forum on Saturday, explained that government’s regulations always helped.
Bello, who expressed fulfillment over his experience as UNILAG VC, stated that part of his vision while serving at the university was to reposition the institution to meet up with other universities in Africa.
