The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Wednesday described Nigeria’s democratic system as a work in progress and urged citizens and civil society groups to remain actively engaged in safeguarding and strengthening democratic governance.
In a statement commemorating Democracy Day, Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti reflected on the significance of June 12, which marks the restoration of civil rule after years of military dictatorship.
“It is a milestone because it represents the day democracy and civil rule were reclaimed and restored in Nigeria, after a prolonged, destabilising military rule,” Fasoranti said.
He attributed the country’s uninterrupted democratic experience since 1999 to the sacrifices of civil society actors and pro-democracy movements, including the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), of which Afenifere was a principal member.
“Without a doubt, the sustained and uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 is a product of the sacrifices and commitment of our heroes and heroines in the civil society groups, and other well-meaning compatriots who, along with Afenifere, coalesced into the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, to constitute the vanguard of progressive forces that ensured the restoration of democracy and the birth of the Fourth Republic in Nigeria,” he stated.
Fasoranti also emphasised that the country’s democratic gains must not lead to complacency. He stressed the need for vigilance and continued participation in democratic processes.
He added, “While we celebrate sustained democratic rule in our country on this auspicious occasion, we’re also reminded that democratic practice remains work in progress. We, therefore, call on all our compatriots, particularly the civil society groups, to collaborate with other progressive forces to deepen democratic practice and processes in Nigeria, for the benefit of this generation and generations yet unborn.”
He further underscored the role of democratic ideals in fostering unity across Nigeria’s diverse population.
“June 12 is a reminder that although we come from different backgrounds with diverse perspectives, our shared goal of a prosperous Nigeria where equity, justice, social and economic well-being are at play is the driving force behind our determination to see this country progress,” Fasoranti said.
The statement marked the annual commemoration of June 12 as Democracy Day, which honours the legacy of Nigeria’s democratic transition and the struggles that led to the Fourth Republic.
