The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the execution of a targeted airstrike on a suspected terrorist enclave in Borno State, as part of the ongoing Operation Hadin Kai.

The operation, carried out on August 2, 2024, was aimed at neutralizing a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) factory and logistics hub located deep in the Mandara Hills.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the airstrike was launched following credible intelligence reports.

These reports had indicated the presence of a possible IED factory, which had been relocated multiple times due to sustained military pressure.

Initially located in Gwoza and then moved to the Timbuktu Triangle in Sambisa Forest, the factory was eventually traced to Grazah, a remote area within the Mandara Hills.

“For weeks, the suspected IED factory at Grazah was under close surveillance,” Gabkwet said.

“The site was consistently observed, with various installations and the presence of armed terrorists suggesting that it was a strategic location.

“Additionally, two gun trucks were identified, hidden under a large tree near the suspected factory.”

According to Gabkwet, the intelligence gathered prompted the NAF to carry out a precise airstrike on the location, successfully destroying the factory and the gun trucks, and neutralizing several terrorists.

The aftermath of the strike, marked by a thick cloud of smoke, confirmed the effectiveness of the operation.

“This operation underscored the ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to dismantle terrorist networks in the region and prevent further attacks on innocent civilians,” Gabkwet said.

“The success of this mission is a significant step towards achieving the objectives of Operation Hadin Kai, which continues to target insurgent activities in the northeastern part of the country.”
