Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Friday in Ibadan enjoined Nigerians to dwell on issues that would promote national peace and unity.

Ajimobi gave the advice at the Armed Forces and Remembrance Day 2016 at the Government House Arcade in Ibadan.

He said the occasion was to appreciate and celebrate the nation’s heroes who paid the supreme price to ensure national unity.

“It is a reflection of our fallen heroes who sacrificed for the nation’s peace and unity”, he said

Maj.-Gen. Laz Ilo, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, said the celebration was to remember and appreciate the sacrifice of the nation’s heroes.

Ilo said it was also to motivate the soldiers in service to be more committed to their duties and be assured that their sacrifice would not be in vain.

“This programme has moral and motivational effect on the soldiers. It shows that dying in the service for a noble cause is worthy and attracts celebration”, he said.

Pastor Michael Olagunju, state Chairman, Nigerian Legion, appealed to the Federal Government to ensure regular and improved pension for members of the legion.

He urged ex-service men yet to join the legion to do so, adding that some ex-service men had refused to recognise or join the organisation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured the laying of wreaths, firing of volley and the release of ceremonial peace balloons.

Chief Moses Adeyemo, the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Michael Adeyemo, the Speaker, State House of Assembly, Justice Munta Abimbola, Chief Judge of Oyo State, were among dignitaries that attended the ceremony.

Others were Air Commodore E O Akinbayo, Commander, Nigerian Air force Detachment, Ibadan, Mr Adeleye Oyebade, the Commissioner of Police, High Chief Eddy Oyewole, Ashipa of Ibadanland, among others.
