The chairman of the Silverbird Group and a former senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, has drummed support for the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in light of the allegations made against him by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

In a recent interview, Abubakar, who was Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, revealed that he had received reports of Akpabio’s corruption while in office as Governor. He also referred to him as a serial abuser of women.

Murray-Bruce has, however, expressed solidarity with Akpabio, noting that he is a man of impeccable character and Nigerians are fortunate to have him at the helm of affairs.

He said, “I know Senator Godswill Akpabio personally and intimately. He is a man of unimpeachable good character, and both the South-South and Nigeria are fortunate to have him at the helm of affairs at the National Assembly at this delicate stage in our national growth.”

While speaking on the corruption allegations against Akpabio, Murray-Bruce said independent investigative agencies have investigated the senate president, who has come out as “clean as a whistle” in each of them.

He added that he would not watch while people attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigerian Senate.

“I give him my right hand of fellowship and stand firmly with him. Innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles will always come. But they can never be so powerful that they will take preeminence over facts,” said Murray-Bruce.
