Akwa Ibom orders closure of school as cultists threaten principal with fetish objects
Akwa Ibom State government has closed down a public secondary school, Uyo High.
The decision was conveyed, yesterday, by the chairman of the state Secondary School Board, Dr. Ekaette Okon, following a directive by Commissioner for Education Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet.
The order may not be unconnected with the activities of suspected cultists in the school who had always engaged in a show of force with the pupils of neighbouring Government Technical College, Ewet.
It was gathered that the area had witnessed intense cult wars, which climaxed two weeks ago in an attack on a fuel station opposite the school.
A source said, thereafter, about six students were arrested and taken to the police headquarters at Ikot Akpanabia.
Apparently angered by the detention of their colleagues, the suspected cultists placed fetish objects near the office of the principal alongside a note at his door.
The note reads: “We give you 24 hours to release our boys or we ‘fall’ you. Remember, we know your house, children and wife, Iwok Close. Mr. Principal, we always defend you but you are fighting us. We wash our hands off your case. We fight for you no more.”
The objects include: fresh palm fronds, a red piece of cloth, whitish objects and a bottle containing a black liquid.
The principal, Michael Etuk, could not be reached for comments. But when contacted, Mrs. Etiebet responded via a text message saying: “I’m in a meeting. I have directed the Chairman Secondary Education Board to temporarily close down the school.”
A student, who spoke to some journalists at the gate, said she and her colleagues were shocked to see fetish objects near the principal’s office. She said they were asked to vacate the premises at 12:00pm to avoid a crisis.
