Akwa Ibom State has stepped up its preparation for 2023 National Population and Housing Census, by appointing Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, as the Chairman of the State 2023 Census Publicity Steering Committee.

The committee is set up to carry out public sensitisation and enlightenment on the census. It has the Federal Commissioner of the Commission, Chief Benedict Ukpong, as co-chairman. Journalists are also included in the committee.

Meanwhile, the state government has declared its readiness to put in place apparatuses to update the populace on the exercise, scheduled to hold across the country from March 29 to April 2, 2023.

This was made known on Monday, during a one-day capacity-building workshop with the theme, “Effective Reporting of the 2023 Population and Housing Census”, organised by the Commission for journalists at the Conference Hall of Uranus Hotel, Aka Itiam Road, Uyo.

In his remarks, Ememobong commended the Commission for organising the workshop for media professionals, which he described as apt and timely, in view of the critical role pressmen will play in dissemination of information towards and during the exercise.

Ememobong, who was a special guest at the event, said the nation is desirous of having credible 2023 Census, as it is vital in planning and development processes of government, especially equitable distribution of budgetary allocation, social amenities and infrastructure to people in different parts of the country.

Represented by the Director of Public Relations in the Ministry, Mrs Grace Akpan, the commissioner pledged to use all available media platforms under his watch to boost publicity for the census and urged participants at the workshop to take the training seriously to be fully equipped for the crucial task ahead and wished them very successful deliberations.

In his address, Ukpong said the workshop would facilitate credible, reliable and acceptable census in Nigeria, as journalists and other stakeholders were engaged for contributions in the commission’s first ever digital and green census.

Earlier, the state Director of the Commission, Mr. Emmanuel Edem, said the workshop would build a strong information system towards the success of the census and expressed appreciation to stakeholders for responding to their invitation.
