Amnesty International has strongly condemned a military air strike that reportedly killed more than 100 people at Jalli Futchimiram in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The incident, which occurred around 2:46 p.m. on Saturday at Jilli Market, was said to have taken place during a military operation targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
Although the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has yet to release an official statement, eyewitnesses alleged that three military jets carried out the strike, hitting the market and resulting in heavy civilian casualties.
According to Amnesty International, the emergency unit of Geidam General Hospital has so far received at least 35 individuals with severe injuries following the attack.
Reacting via its official X platform on Sunday, the human rights organisation criticised the operation, stating: “Launching air raids is not a legitimate law enforcement method by anyone’s standard.”
The group further described the action as reckless and unlawful, adding that it reflects a disturbing disregard for civilian lives.
Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
