Amnesty International has called for justice, fairness and equal opportunities for women and young girls in Nigeria, urging stakeholders to prioritise safe spaces for women to thrive.

Speaking yesterday, the Bauchi State Coordinator of Amnesty International, Amina Ibrahim, noted that International Women’s Day 2026 focused on ‘Give to Gain’; hence, stakeholders should give more to women.

She said Amnesty International decided to gather men, women, young girls, traditional leaders, the media and others to celebrate women, not just only to celebrate them, but also to have conversation and discussions to find out the gaps that are available and come up with solutions that would promote young girl or young woman in Nigeria and beyond, as well have access to justice and equal treatment as a human.

ALSO, Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu, has called for increased representation of women in the judiciary, highlighting their critical role in strengthening justice systems and promoting access to justice for all.

He made the remarks as Nigeria joined the global community in observing the 2026 International Day of Women Judges, observed every March 10.

This year’s theme, “Women Judges on the Bench and Beyond: Protecting Access to Justice,” celebrates the contributions of women in the judiciary while reflecting on progress in advancing gender equality in the justice sector.

According to the NHRC boss, women judges enhance the legitimacy, credibility, and inclusiveness of justice systems.

Highlighting their impact, Ojukwu cited women judges’ contributions to advancing human rights, particularly in cases involving gender-based violence, discrimination, and the protection of vulnerable groups.
