AMVCA 2026: How Jury Decision Favoured ‘My Father’s Shadow’ Over Rivals

Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA)

The dominance of My Father’s Shadow at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), held on May 9, 2026, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, has continued to generate industry debate over the balance between jury evaluation and audience preference.

The film outperformed strong contenders such as To Kill A Monkey, The Herd, Gingerrr, and Colours of Fire to emerge as the night’s biggest winner, clinching five major awards.

The 12th edition of the AMVCA featured 32 categories, comprising 18 jury-voted awards, 11 audience-voted categories, and three special recognition honours, making the judging process a blend of professional assessment and public participation.

While audience-voted categories were determined through online engagement on the A

Africa Magic platform, the most prestigious awards—including Best Overall Movie, Best Director, Best Writing, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Design—were decided by a panel of industry experts led by veteran actress Joke Silva.

My Father’s Shadow secured wins in all its categories under the jury segment, including Best Overall Movie and Best Director for Akinola Davies Jr., a performance that critics say reflected its strong technical execution, narrative depth, and production quality.

The film’s success was largely attributed to its meticulous storytelling and technical brilliance rather than popularity or audience voting strength.

Close behind were Colours of Fire and To Kill A Monkey, which each recorded three wins. Colours of Fire triumphed in Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction, while To Kill A Monkey earned accolades in Best Supporting Actor (Bucci Franklin), Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Industry observers note that the jury’s decision underscores the AMVCA’s emphasis on craftsmanship, structure, and cinematic quality over mass appeal in key categories.

Entertainment analyst Kehinde Ajose, speaking on the outcome, said the results reflected the jury’s clear artistic benchmarks.

“Popularity is not the only criterion. The jury understood exactly what they were evaluating,” he said, adding that some expected winners, including performances in other productions, were overlooked despite strong audience expectations.

Between 2013 and 2026, Nigeria has continued to dominate the Best Overall Movie category at the AMVCA, winning nine out of 11 editions, while Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana have each secured the top prize once.

This trend, analysts say, reflects Nollywood’s scale, production strength, and dominance in African film distribution and audience reach.

According to industry stakeholders, while other African film industries continue to record occasional standout performances, Nigeria remains the continent’s central hub for commercial and cultural filmmaking influence.

The AMVCA 2026 ceremony, hosted by Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha, further reinforced the evolving dynamics between popular vote-driven categories and jury-led recognition of cinematic excellence.
