The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State by three days in response to strong public turnout and appeals from residents.
The extension, which moves the deadline from Thursday, July 17, to Sunday, July 20, 2025, was announced in a statement issued by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
According to the Commission, 96,085 new voters were registered between July 8 and July 16—an average of over 10,600 registrations per day across the 326 registration centres in the state. In addition, 12,595 voters applied for transfers, while 7,061 requested updates to their records or replacements of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“The Commission is pleased with the turnout of registrants in Anambra State and the peaceful conduct of the exercise,” the statement read. “In response to appeals from citizens, the Commission hereby extends the exercise for three more days.”
INEC noted that it will publish a preliminary register for public scrutiny as required by law. This will be followed by a data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). A detailed demographic breakdown will also be released.
Preliminary data shows that 58% of new registrants—56,017 people—are female, while 52.48% fall within the 18–34 age bracket.
Meanwhile, the Commission disclosed that it has received five additional letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties. This brings the total number of such applications to 134. Details of these groups, including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, and interim leadership, have been made available on INEC’s official platforms.
The voter registration exercise is part of INEC’s preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State.
