Men of Anambra State police Command have killed the gang leader of a kidnapping group, terrorising Oko community and Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Council of the state.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tochukwu Ikenga, said five others were arrested after security operatives stormed their hideout, engaged them in a gun duel and rescued a kidnap victim on Sunday.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, yesterday, Ikenga said: “Based on intelligence, which indicated the location of a kidnapped victim in a town (name withheld) in Anaocha Local Council.
“Police operatives working with the vigilante in the area, stormed the location, on Sunday, June 5, rescued the four victims and arrested one Emeka , who was suspected of complicity in the crime.
“Upon interrogation, he (Emeka), confessed to the crime and led detectives to the hideout of his gang in a town (name withheld) in Idemili North Local Council, where detectives engaged the gangsters in a shoot out.
“The gang leader, one Chinedu Ajogu a.k.a Sampolo was gunned down and five others, including their native doctor were arrested for interrogation and prosecution.”
He said police recovered the following items from the suspects, one SMG rifle, one Beretta Pistol, two locally made revolver pistols, one dagger, one Biafra flag and two pairs of Eastern Security Network (ESN) uniforms.
Others were, two berets, two web belts, assorted charms and one Acura Sports Utility Van (SUV), snatched from a Reverend Father in Awgbu community in Orumba North Local Council, on May 31, 2022.
According to him, the suspects arrested are being interrogated with a view to eliciting information on their involvement in previous crimes. He commended the media for their collaborating efforts in the fight against criminals in the state.
