Security operatives in Anambra State have killed one of the leaders of the gunmen terrorising the state and arrested five other gang members. They also rescued four kidnapped victims in Neni town, Anaocha Local Council of the state.
The spokesman of the state police command, Ikenga Tochukwu, in Awka, yesterday, said the police operatives working with the vigilante in the area stormed the location on Sunday, rescued the four victims and arrested one Emeka.
Ikenga said upon interrogation, Emeka confessed to the crime and led detectives to the hideout of his gang in Oba, where detectives engaged the gangsters in a shootout.
He said the gang leader, Chinedu Ajogu, was gunned down; while five others, including their native doctor, were arrested.
The command has commended indigenes of the state for giving information to security operatives on criminals in their localities.
The command through its spokesperson, Ikenga, said information by indigenes has helped burst many criminal syndicates in the last one week, and also taken out many criminal elements.
Ikenga said: “Last week, when you came for a press conference, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Echeng Echeng, had complained about the reluctance of most communities to give information on criminals, who have been code-named unknown gunmen.
“The CP had complained that there seemed to be a conspiracy of silence among most indigenes, but I can tell you that after those reports, many indigenes have now started volunteering information to us.
“Within one week, we have got information that we never knew existed. We have also heard a lot of stories from people, and we have used that information to burst many criminal syndicates.”
