ANKARA

ANKARA fabrics have come to stay, whether we like it or not. They have become one of the most sought after fabrics in the continent. Different designers are making unique styles for fashionistas with the fabric.

Adebayo Adegbe, creative head of Modela Couture, says that ankara depicts Africanism and makes the wearer feel at home. “I love ankara because it is beautiful and can be made into diverse outfits. They can be worn to almost every occasion, however, for you to rock the fabric and look unique, you should know how to wear it.

Modela’s tips on how to rock ankara

• It’s easy to rock African prints with denim pants / skirts, leggings, plain and pattern cotton, mixed with lace, lycra, prints accessories (bag, sandals, belt, hat /cap, earrings, fascinators etc) on plain, but be careful on how to mix the print (multi print design).

• It’s safe to mix same design print fabric, but in various colours. It comes out really interesting and fun to play with!

• I love to experiment with some wooden print with Daviva print and with Vlisco and they really come out special, even with other prints too, even mix adire eleko with wax prints, they make bold statements! You can try that too.

• Choose a style that will suit your personality and class.

• Apart from aso ebi, African print can be used to accentuate a lot of diverse designs such as incorporating it as jackets over plain skirts for office wears (common in Accra and major hotels and cabin crew uniform mix and match) because of its vibrant colours, its use in mixing cannot be over emphasised. It is multipurpose in use and appeal. Making ankara jacket for your self isn’t a bad idea.
