APC awaits Yusuf’s defection, ‘suspends’ e-registration in Kano

ADC unaware of Kwankwaso’s alliance with Obi, defection

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration exercise in Kano State. Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has denied knowledge of any alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing such discussions as not unusual.

The directive by Tinubu was disclosed by a member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, in a 27-second video widely circulated on social media over the weekend. In the video, Doguwa said the decision was taken by the APC national leadership following an order from the President.

“The leadership of the APC at the national level, acting on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, has ordered that the commencement of the APC e-registration in Kano be stopped,” the lawmaker said.

Doguwa, who represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, is a ranking APC chieftain in Kano serving as Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) as well as the Special Committee on Oil Theft/Losses in the 10th National Assembly.

The development comes barely a week after the Kano State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Ahmed Aruwa, told newsmen that the party was set to flag off the e-registration exercise in the state.

Aruwa said the APC was expecting the former governor of Kano State and national leader of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, to be in the state for the exercise.

Although the APC has yet to issue an official statement on the suspension, the development comes amid heightened political tension and speculation surrounding the possible defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo had reportedly proposed an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance ahead of the 2027 elections. Obi and Kwankwaso were the presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and NNPP, respectively, in the 2023 general election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Obi as the second runner-up behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kwankwaso as fourth. Obi is now a member of the ADC, a party he officially joined on December 31, 2025.

Although Kwankwaso has yet to join the ADC, the proposed alliance with Obi has already begun, reportedly initiated by Obasanjo. A top ADC source also disclosed that the former President had been connecting Obi with northern power brokers to ensure the success of the alliance.

However, according to the ADC, while discussions of alliances are not unusual, the party is not aware of any formal Obi–Kwankwaso alliance.  ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, added that the party would be willing to welcome Kwankwaso, describing him as a strong political leader.

Abdullahi said, “Kwankwaso is yet to join the ADC, but we are more than willing to have him with us. Obi is also a great politician and an asset to the party. However, whatever discussions they are having are outside the party.”
