PDP, ADP clinch second and third positions

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who is the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, has been declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

The INEC Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Olayemi Akinwunmi, made the declaration at exactly 2:31 p.m. at the State Collation Centre at the Akure office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

Akinwunmi, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, announced the final results after collating results from the 18 local council areas of the state.

According to the returning officer, while reeling out the figures, Aiyedatiwa polled 366,788 votes to defeat his closest and main challenger, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Agboola Ajayi Ighodalo, who scored 117,845 votes.

The candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) came a distant third with 4,138 votes.

The returning officer said, “That Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC, having satisfied all the requirements of law and scored a majority of the lawful votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Akinwunmi declared.

With the final results, Aiyedatiwa cleared all 18 local council areas of the state, while Ajayi did not get any.

Earlier, Ajayi had expressed dissatisfaction with the election, stressing that the process was compromised.

“The system has been compromised. It’s sad INEC can’t conduct an election well in one state.

“BVAS isn’t working; it took about 10 minutes to capture me. I think it is deliberate on the part of INEC and the REC, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, and we’ve said this several times: the woman can’t be fair.

“I have had a series of complaints from across the state; people are complaining of vote buying. It is a very shameful exercise.”
