APGA seeks special detention points for terror suspects

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has joined individuals and groups to urge the Federal government to relocate the 47 Boko Haram inmates recently moved to Ekwulobia Minimum Prison in Anambra State to a more secure facility outside the state or take them back to where they were moved from.

National Chairman of the party, Victor Ike Oye, in a statement issued by APGA Director of Publicity, Ifeanacho Oguejiofor, urged the Federal Government to take an immediate action by directing that the prisoners be moved to a more secure place outside Anambra State.

Oye also advised the government to consider the example of the United States of America when it was faced with the same debilitating situation that it built Guantanamo Bay detention facility located in a small Island near Cuba, where terror suspects and convicts are detained.According to him, such decision by the U.S. was taken to ensure security, since the Island of Guantanamo Bay was isolated and would be difficult for terrorists to attack because it requires one to cross the ocean, unlike the Ekwulobia prison, which would be very easy to be assessed by terrorists.

The APGA chairman alleged that the prison authorities did not consider such critical factors and problems involved in the relocation of the inmates, wondering whether the move was “a case of deliberate design to continue to spite the Igbo”whom he alleged have suffered many years of marginalization and ill- treatment.

He cautioned that continued stay of the terrorist suspects in Ekwulobia will disconcert the people of the community and indeed the entire Anambra State as well as the neighbouring Igbo states that are similarly apprehensive.

The statement reads in part: “We enjoin the Federal Government to be prompt in relocating the terrorist suspects in order not to seem to be sabotaging the good works of the Anambra State government and its effort in sustaining air of security and tranquility that has already pervaded the entire state before this incident.

“ APGA admonishes the Federal Government that the good people of Anambra State and its government do not need this distraction. Meanwhile, we implore the Federal Government to start constructing modern prisons across the nation and also embark on provision of jobs for millions of our unemployed youth to curtail or curb crimes since accessories to terrorism and other crimes are majorly youth whose future have been mortgaged by years of misadministration and malfeasance by successive
