Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has charged practitioners to explore volunteering opportunities to address critical challenges, particularly infrastructure issues, mentor future generations and attain sustainable solutions.

The President, Dr Adebisi Osim, gave the charge at the professional development webinar, with the theme, ‘Turning Passion into Sustainable Impact Through Volunteering’ organised by the association at the weekend.

According to Osim, turning passion into sustainable impact through volunteering is not only a call to action but also a reminder that the power to create lasting change lies with everyone.

She argued that, as engineers, innovators and community leaders, individual passion drives people to solve problems, create opportunities and make meaningful contributions to society.

“But how do we translate this passion into sustainable impact? How do we ensure our efforts leave a legacy that inspires future generations? Volunteering is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal.”

It is through volunteering that we share knowledge, mentor the next generation, and address critical challenges in our communities. Volunteering amplifies our collective strength and transforms our passion into action, and action into sustainable solutions,” Osim said.

The civil engineer emphasised that volunteering was not merely about giving back; but unlocking passions, nurturing talents and creating a positive ripple effect within our communities and the engineering profession by championing innovation, driving social change and enhancing growth.

She added: “By sharing our expertise, we can inspire and mentor the next generation of women engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. We can address critical challenges in our communities through engineering solutions, making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Volunteering provides invaluable personal and professional development opportunities, expanding our networks and honing our leadership skills.”
