Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has denied approving the use of veil (hijab) in public schools across the state. He made the refutal yesterday at a roundtable on Development Collaborative Framework for Education Development and Advancement organised by the Development and Advancement in Western Nigeria (DAWN) in Osogbo, the state capital.

Aregbesola challenged his accusers to come up with concrete evidence to support their claim, just as he also asked those accusing him of plunging the state into religious crisis to equally present something very substantial to authenticate the allegation.

‎He noted that all programmes introduced into the state’s education rebranding were resolutions from the education summit organised by his administration shortly after coming on board.

The governor asserted that the Professor Wole Soyinka-led summit never considered nor recommended any religion.Speaking on education in the entire South West geopolitical zone, Aregbesola noted that the current downward trend should be worrisome owing to the role education plays in development, enlightenment, leadership as well as character building and good citizenship.

“There is nothing religious in any of our policies. The fact on ground contradicts our opposition’s claim.”

The choice of my deputy governor tells it all. I knew she was a Pentecostal before I picked her. Everything we have done in education is in line with the resolution of our education summit.

“Against all speculations, I have not ordered the use of hijab. I challenge anybody with evidence to come out and show that I have made a proclamation on hijab.

“If I have permitted hijab, will the Muslim have gone to court to challenge it? Is that not contradictory? Is it a crime that I am a Muslim, is it because I struggle to be a good Muslim that everything I do is being misunderstood? I think I don’t deserve all these lies against me,” Aregbesola queried.

The question remains that the press reported that you Aregbe warned Christian students to go and remove their choir robs. Secondly, you have not appealed the rulling of the court to show that it does not represent the stand of the government as a government of unity and love and not of disunity and divisions.

Osun state was had been a peaceful state, with Christians and Muslims living as brothers and sisters until divisive Arebgasola entered the scene as governor. He sure cannot deny this.
