Armed men shoot accountant, cart away money in Calabar

Two armed men on a motorcycle, yesterday, shot an accountant working with the Cross River State Ministry of Education at close range and carted away-undisclosed amount of money in his possession.

It was gathered that the victim, Mr. Denis Usibe had visited his bank and made a withdrawal of a large sum of money for the ministry, unknown to him that assailants were trailing him.

An eyewitness who works in one of the ministries, who pleaded that his name should not be mentioned, told The Guardian that Usibe was trailed to the ministry. According to the eyewitness, while alighting from his vehicle, the robbers jumped down from their motorcycle and demanded for the money.

“When he tried to resist, one of them shot him in the leg, snatched one of the bags and zoomed off on the motorcycle. He came back in his vehicle, and was about to go into the office when one of his assailants attacked him and started struggling with the bags he had with him containing the money he withdrew.”

The source added: “One of the armed men took the bag, and jumped onto the waiting motorcycle and sped off to an unknown destination. The victim was rushed to the Navy hospital.”

When contacted, the Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident.

She said the command is on top of the matter.
