Army kills two Boko Haram terrorists, as bombers blow selves up in Borno

Troops of the 5 Brigade Garrison of Operation Lafiya Dole yesterday killed two Boko Haram horse riders, while fleeing from their Gambo Yukku Forest hideout during an operation at Aisaram Village in Borno State.

Borno State Police Commissioner, Damian Chukwu, confirmed the killings of two suicide bombers, who were sneaking into Maiduguri through the Muna Garage corridor.

Deputy Director of Public Relations, 8 Task Force Division, Col. Timothy Antigha, in a statement yesterday in Maiduguri said: “As part of the clearance operations, about 6.20 am on Sunday, two Boko Haram terrorists riding horses attempted to outflank them. But they were spotted by vigilant troops and shot during a fire fight.”

He said items recovered from the fleeing terror horse riders include an AK-47 rifle, a magazine with a single round of 7.62mm ammunition, two mobile phones, two horses and N7, 000 cash.

He said none of the troops was killed or injured in the three-hour operations.

Confirming the bombers who blew up themselves, Chukwu said the incident occurred along the Maiduguri-Dikwa road on Sunday at 7.25pm.

In a related development, the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps has said that it had presented cheques of over N30 million to families of fallen heroes who died in active service during operations in the Northeast.

The Commander, Infantry Corps (CIC), Major-General Isidore Henry Edet, said the corps under its Infantry Welfare Scheme tagged: Nigerian Army Infantry Officers Welfare Scheme (NAIOWS) has given out over N30 million to 47 family members of officers who died while in active service in Operation Lafia Dole in the Northeast and other operations in the country.

A statement by its Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre, Captain Victor Olumide Olukoya, said the Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Anthony Bamdele Omozoje, represented Edet at the event.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has charged commanding officers in all the formations across the country to be proactive and innovative to solve the security challenges facing the country.
