Wife of Imo State Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha, has said she would ensure that her platform is strengthened to fight human trafficking in Nigeria and African continent.

Accompanied by the wife of the Deputy governor designate, Chioma Ekenze, and other women officials in the government, she identified poverty, idleness, and loss of confidence amongst other vices as major causes of the social malady of human trafficking.

She made the disclosure at the weekend while addressing journalists on the oncoming women August meeting, scheduled to take place on August 7 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. This will be the last she will host as the governor’s wife in the state. According to her, using the theme of the event, “Sharing our common cultural values,” she stressed that she was in alignment with other women groups across the country and Africa, to ensure human trafficking becomes a thing of the past.

She disclosed that Aisha Buhari, Dolapo Osinbajo and wife of the Gambian President, amongst other prominent women and men in the country would attend the event.

As part of the lined up empowerment programme for the women, she said more programmes aimed at reducing poverty would take place, including giving out two bedroom each to indigent women from the three senatorial zones of the state (Imo East, Imo West and Imo North). Other cultural, arts and life enhancing programmes billed to take place include Agricultural exhibition products, head tieing and winning of a bus for the winner’s transportation scheme, Oso mmiri (water running competition), among others.

She said the standard put in place since 2011 the event commenced should be sustained by her successor.
