As part of effort to commemorate the international day of the girl child, the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Alumnae Association with support of the U.S. Consulate Lagos urged young girls to unleash their economic growth potential.
The association marked the day with secondary school girls from public schools in Lagos invited to a thought-provoking movie screening, designed to instill essential values of leadership, selflessness and personal growth.
President of the Alumnae Association, Adebisi Odeleye emphasised the pivotal role of young girls in the nation’s economic growth, encouraged them to dream boldly and break through cultural and environmental limitations.
“AWE plays a pivotal role in empowering enterprising women by equipping them with the knowledge, networks, and opportunities required to establish and expand successful businesses by championing women’s economic prospects and ensuring that they possess the necessary capabilities and resources to participate in the economy,
“The academy aligns directly with the U.S. National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality, on a local scale, it leverages public-private partnerships, local collaborations, and the networks of U.S. Exchange Alumni to facilitate women’s growth, thereby fostering localized prosperity across more than 100 countries worldwide,” she said.
Vice President of the Alumnae, Victoria Ajayi underscored the significance of investing in the well-being and empowerment of girls for the overall progress and development of our society.
“This event served as a catalyst for inspiring and empowering the next generation of girls to be leaders and change-makers,” she said.
Assistant General Secretary, Oguh Oluwayemisi Deborah, highlighted the critical theme of “Unity and Collaboration” as she emphasised that collaboration, as depicted in the movie, is an indispensable factor in overcoming challenges and preserving their advanced civilization.
A student from Festac Girls Senior Secondary School, Abujere Elisabeth, noted that the movie taught her the importance of unity, leadership, and passion in the lives of girls while  Idera Jackrot from Ayangbure Junior Secondary School, Ikorodu, expressed her gratitude to the program coordinators and pledged, on behalf of the students, to put everything they learnt into practice.
