Chairman of Badagry-West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Joseph Gbenu, on Friday, turned the shod for the construction of a customary court in the council area.

Gbenu, who performed the turning of the shod at the council secretariat in Kankon, said the building, when completed, would ensure effective and efficient discharge of services to the public.

He said that the duties and roles of the customary court could not be over-emphasised.

“Customary courts are the lowest courts in the hierarchy of the Nigerian court system.

“They are the cheapest form of resolving disputes, especially for the common man,” he said.

The chairman said that the council was long due to have a customary court like every other local council in the state.

He said that the court would enable issues within its jurisdiction to be handled without making residents to go outside the council area to seek redress on customary matters.

 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those that the occasion was attended by Mr Rauf Yemaren, Vice-Chairman of the LCDA and the Council Manager, Mr Akande Lawrence.

Others were: Mr Asuni Kamorudeen, Council Treasurer, Mr Oje Kehinde, Council Engineer and Mrs Ibiyemi Enuice, Human Resources Officer of the council.
