Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, well known as Burna Boy, is in the eye of a storm following reports that the Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has instructed its members to temporarily remove his songs from their sets.
The directive, issued to disc jockeys nationwide follows an alleged physical altercation between the hit maker and frontline disc jockey cum Wizkid’s official DJ, Michael Babatunde Adeyinka popularly DJ Tunez, at a popular Lagos nightspot.
The incident occurred late Monday night at “Obi’s House,” a weekly Afrobeats event. According to eyewitness reports and viral social media footage, a disagreement escalated into a confrontation after DJ Tunez reportedly declined requests to play Burna Boy’s song, opting instead for a set heavily featuring music by rival superstar and fellow Grammy-award winner, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun well known Wizkid.
In an official statement released via Instagram, the NDJ condemned the violence and called for a “sonic strike” against Burna Boypending a full internal investigation. “Burna Boy’s music is temporarily removed from all member playlists until further notice,” the statement read.
“We maintain a firm stance against any form of intimidation or physical assault against our members. The DJ is the heartbeat of the industry and must be respected.”
However, the industry appears divided, as the Deejays Association of Nigeria (DJAN), a separate body, distanced itself from the ban, calling the reports “false and misleading” and noting that DJ Tunez is not a registered member of their specific organisation.
Breaking his silence on the matter, Burna Boy dismissed claims that his entourage “jumped” the DJ. During a live stream the Last Last crooner admitted to a physical confrontation but minimized the severity.
“It’s a lie; 10 people didn’t touch that guy,” he stated. “I gave him two slaps and told my people not to interfere. I even waited for hours for him to bring backup, but no one showed up.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Wizkid took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam Burna Boy’s actions, calling the assault “cowardly” and mocking the singer’s subsequent social media posts.
