Battle against misinformation: How Sanchit Gupta, Ankita Sharma made India Reflects reliable source of global news
Fake news has become commonplace in today’s Internet-driven society. Those who spread misinformation rarely face any consequences. Journalists and entrepreneurs Sanchit Gupta and Ankita Sharma, have made it their goal to help the country get back to being honest and telling the truth.
Misinformation has become a global concern since the 2016 U.S. presidential election. There are a lot of fake news stories on digital platforms and in traditional news, most of them well-crafted with seemingly factual details, which makes it hard to know what to believe.
Misinformation is being combated on multiple fronts. Social media companies are also taking steps to reduce the spread of fake news, and news organizations are working to improve their verification standards.
In many countries, combating misinformation is frequently more difficult. Speaking out against the powerful interests can be dangerous in countries with less press freedom. False information can spread more easily in countries with high levels of illiteracy.
According to Sanchit, combating misinformation is critical regardless of where it occurs. “Misinformation can lead to risky decisions and erode trust in the government and other institutions. Fighting misinformation is a battle for the truth,” he adds.
“To deal with this problem, world needs to learn more about the media and the internet,” Sanchit says.” People must be able to evaluate critically the information they encounter online and in the media. Moreover, fact-checking organizations must be provided with the resources necessary for effective operation.”
India Reflects: The first truly international news agency out of India
Social media sites are not solely responsible for the spread of fake news. For page views and ratings, many news organizations publish information that hasn’t been checked or is completely false.
This is one of the reasons why Sanchit and Ankita founded IndiaReflects.com, India’s first truly global news service. Sanchit says that IndiaReflects.com was created to “bring back objectivity, accuracy, thoroughness, investigative skills, professionalism, trust, and discipline in journalism.” As Editor-in-Chief, Sanchit puts out articles about international events, business, economics, technology, and sports, among other things.
Sanchit acknowledges that launching IndiaReflects.com is a significant step forward in the fight against disinformation, but he emphasizes that much more needs to be done. Sanchit thinks that news organizations and schools should be more careful about what they say about the news and adds that social media sites should also do more to stop false information from spreading.
Despite these potential solutions, Gupta emphasizes that it is up to each individual to be cautious about what they read and share. He says, “We must be skeptical of everything they read and only provide solid evidence to them. And unless we take action, disinformation will continue to be the bedrock of our democratic system.”
