Bauchi, Niger govs make case for ideal democracy

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has described democratic system of government as the best, as it puts elected governments at all levels on their toes to avoid being hated by electorate.

Mohammed, in his Democracy Day message, yesterday, stated: “That we are today celebrating the 23rd Democracy Day is a testimony to the fact that democratic governance has not only been firmly rooted but has also come to stay in Nigeria.

“There is no better alternative to democracy as a form of government that gives the people the right to choose whom to govern them and how they want to be governed. It is this democratic right of choice that puts elected governments at the national and state levels on their toes, so as not to incur the wrath of the electorate – being voted out of power during periodic elections.”

His Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello, said it was time the country’s leadership departed from the usual rhetorics and seek pragmatic solution to the challenges of governance, not to endanger the hard-earned democracy.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mary Noel Berje, to mark Democracy Day, Bello acknowledged the fragility of the country’s democracy and expressed the need for the leaders to preoccupy themselves with how to sustain it and better the lives of the people.

“There is the need to reinvent the wheel of governance that will take the country to the Promised Land. We must concentrate on discussing solutions to the problems threatening the corporate existence of our country,” the governor stated.
