Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, at the weekend, called for promotion of unity, tolerance and cultural values in the country, just as he cautioned Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) leaders against activities capable of dividing the group.
Speaking during a visit by the body’s factional leaders, Aare Prince Osibote and Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, who met separately with the monarch at his palace in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the royal father stressed the need for attitudinal change, charging members of the socio-cultural organisation to shun partisan politics and form a formidable force.
The traditional ruler, who indicated interest in resolving the issues between the two factions, promised to engage the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ọjájá II) on the impasse.
While addressing the Benin monarch during his visit, Osibote said: “We are your subjects and your sons. There is nothing that we can do without Benin, as far as Oodua is concerned.
“We are from here (Benin Kingdom) and Ile-Ife in Osun State is very important to the organisation. Without this, we cannot move forward.”
Also speaking, Afolabi, who gave a background of how OPC began a few years ago, submitted: “I really appreciate your own comments. We will call the few people that are outside together. We are really glad for your goodwill.
Next time, we will be here as you have directed. We will make sure that we reach out to all aggrieved members and those who still harbour grudges.”
